One of the new major features to the Super Smash
Bros. series is the Smash Ball. The Smash Ball is
one of Brawl's most powerful items. When a character
breaks a Smash Ball, he or she will gain a
super-ability, super-move, or some sort of
super-status. A Smash Ball takes a lot of hits to
break, but it weakens over time, so if it's been
there for a while, make sure to hit it quickly
before your opponent! |

A Smash Ball - isn't it pretty?! |
Some characters have Final Smashes that are better
than others. The number in parenthesis is a rating
on how effective/powerful the Final Smashes are to
us. Your opinion may differ, but this is ours! A 10
is the highest while a 1 is the lowest. Many characters have a Final Smash
representative of themselves from one of their own
games, but some have a Final Smash that was
improvised a bit by the creators. Some characters
share a similar Final Smash to others, such as all
the Starfox characters. |
Bowser - Final Smash: Giga Bowser |
When Bowser breaks a Smash Ball, he'll transform
into Giga Bowser. When he's Giga Bowser, Bowser will
have the same moveset as if he were the regular
Bowser. However, during this period of time, Bowser
will gain incredible strength and will have
significantly more range as Giga Bowser. There is
some negative to Giga Bowser though: He can still be
damaged, and if the player isn't careful, he can die
via suicide. (Rating: 5/10) |
Captain Falcon - Final Smash: Blue Falcon |
One would think that just maybe, Nintendo would've
gone with a Super-Falcon Punch type move since
everyone loves it, but Captain Falcon's Final Smash
actually makes sense! If Captain Falcon uses a Smash
Ball when an opponent is nearby, the Blue Falcon
will knock opponents onto a track. Falcon will then
proceed to knock them silly by running into them.
His Final Smash does around 40% to everyone it hits
and has relatively good knockback. It is the only
Final Smash with a cinematic cutscene.
(Rating: 4/10) |
Diddy - Final Smash: Rocketbarrel Barrage |
Diddy has one of the most powerful Final Smashes in
the whole game. After obtaining a Smash Ball, Diddy
can use it to gain his Jetpack and Peanut Popguns
from Donkey Kong 64! Diddy becomes invincible when
he is in this state and can damage enemies by
touching them or by hitting them with his peanuts.
When the move is about to run out, the rocket
barrels will explode. Any peanuts that are left on
the ground can be eaten! (Rating: 8/10) |
Donkey Kong - Final Smash: Konga Beat |
Donkey Kong gets his Final Smash straight out of
Donkey Konga! After DK gets a Smash Ball, he'll take
out his now-famous Bongos! This Final Smash is hard
to use because the player has to time the A Button
with the beat. If done correctly, the sound waves
will reach farther and will do more damage to the
characters. DK's Final Smash works best on small
stages because opponents have less room to hide, but
overall, it's a bit weak. (Rating: 3/10) |
Falco - Final Smash: Landmaster |
Falco has nearly the exact same Final Smash as Fox
and Wolf: The Landmaster Tank! Falco really never
even uses it in the Starfox games, but he's brought
it along for Brawl. Falco will leap into the sky and
get the Landmaster after KO'ing a Smash Ball. The
Landmaster can barrel roll on the ground, shoot a
energy-like beam from it's cannon, and lift people
off the stage. Falco's Landmaster is worse in
movement and power than Fox's or Wolf's, but it's
better in the air. (Rating: 5/10) |
Fox - Final Smash: Landmaster |
Like Falco and Wolf, Fox is also sporting the
Landmaster Tank. When breaking a Smash Ball, Fox
will jump off the top of the screen and come back
with the Landmaster. With it, Fox can crush/damage
opponents, shoot them with the main gun, or lift
them off the screen. Fox's Landmaster is in between
Wolf's and Falco's - it is faster than Falco's
Landmaster, but it does not match Wolf's in terms of
Power. (Rating: 4/10) |
Ganondorf - Final Smash: Beast Ganon |
Rawr! Ganondorf transforms into a huge beast when
obtaining a Smash Ball! He features the design he
has from Twilight Princess, although no matter how
he looks, he sure is scary! Ganondorf will stomp the
ground as Beast Ganon, paralyzing any enemy on the
ground. As Beast Ganon, he will then charge through
them, dealing high damage and sending his opponents
flying! The only opponents that are hit are the ones
that Ganondorf is facing. This is one of the most
powerful and useful Final Smashes in all of Brawl.
(Rating: 9/10) |
Ice Climbers - Final Smash: Iceberg |
The Ice Climbers are doing what they do best for
their Final Smash: climbing ice! When the team
breaks a Smash Ball, they'll have the ability to
summon an Iceberg to help them out! Opponents take
damage as they touch it, so heavy opponents suffer
big time since they can't avoid it as much. At high
percentages, the Iceberg will cause enemies to
freeze into blocks of ice. The Ice Climbers can be
hurt when using their Final Smash.
(Rating: 5/10) |
Ike - Final Smash: Great Aether |
A regular Aether just isn't good enough for Ike, so
he steps it up with a devastating series of sword
blows called Great Aether. When an opponent is close
to Ike, use the Final Smash. Ike will hit them up
with his Ragnell. Ike then jumps up and delivers
massive blows to his opponent. After hitting them
multiple times, Ike delivers the final blow: in a
fiery eruption of power, Ike hurls them down. When
they hit the ground, the fly pretty far. This move
has a lot of power, dealing about 80%. It also has
great knockback and nice for KOs. (Rating:
7/10) |
Jigglypuff - Final Smash: Puff Up |
Jigglypuff is one of the few characters that have a
Final Smash that is totally improvised, When she
gets a Smash Ball, Jigglypuff can become huge -
bigger than Giga Bowser huge. Opponents that are
anywhere near her will be sent flying to the side.
It's not always a one hit kill, but often time it is
if someone gets bumped by Jigglypuff. There is some
negative though: on medium to large stages, this
move becomes totally useless. On small stages, it
can be absolutely devastating. (Rating: 3/10) |
King Dedede - Final Smash: Waddle Dee Army |
King Dedede has one of the most unique Final Smashes
- there aren't many like his! After the heavyweight
breaks a Smash Ball, Dedede has the ability to
unleash an entire Waddle Dee Army at his opponents.
Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos, and Gordos will
erratically fly all over the screen, damaging and
knocking opponents in random directions. This move
lasts for a decent amount of time and is good for
damaging an opponent, but it doesn't have too much
killing power. (Rating: 4/10) |
Kirby - Final Smash: Cook Kirby |
There aren't too many Final Smashes that a player
could call "absolutely fitting." for any certain
character, but Kirby's is just right on. After
obtaining a Smash Ball, Kirby can become a cook -
literally! Kirby takes out a pot and anyone who is
nearby will get sucked into it and will be cooked
for Kirby's delight. Items are dropped afterwards,
and most of them are healing items or food items or
Kirby-related items. However, it's not amazingly
great - it is very easy to dodge for Kirby's
opponents. (Rating: 4/10) |
Link - Final Smash: Triforce Slash |
The Triforce: Along with the Master Sword, the
symbol of the Zelda franchise. So, why not have a
giant Trifoce that entraps an enemy while Link uses
the Master Sword to inflict heavy damage on an
enemy?! Oh wait, that's exactly what Link's Final
Smash is! When Link has a Smash Ball, any enemy that
is facing Link will be caught in his barrage of
sword attacks even if they aren't close to him, so
the range is very nice. This move does over 60%, and
the last hit is great for KOs. It is a very powerful
Final Smash. (Rating: 7/10) |
Lucario - Final Smash: Aura Storm |
Lucario is the only Pokémon to have the power of
Aura, and all his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
are based of it! The pinnacle of Lucario's Aura is
Aura Storm, a Final Smash that can be devastating.
After breaking a Smash Ball, Lucario will leap to
the top of the stage and fire a massive energy beam,
entrapping all enemies it touches. Aura Storm does a
good amount of damage, but the range is
significantly limited as Lucario angles the beam
sideways making it easy to dodge. (Rating:
3/10) |
Lucas - Final Smash: PK Starstorm |
Lucas shares a similar Final Smash to that of Ness.
After obtaining a Smash Ball, Lucas can unleash PK
Starstorm. Lucas will use his special abilities to
cause massive stars to rain down from the top of the
screen. PK Starstorm is great for free for alls
since it is scattered so much and is generally
better on a small stage so opponents can't run to
the side. The move is moderately powerful with OK
knockback. (Rating: 5/10) |
Luigi - Final Smash: Negative Zone |
Luigi checks in with a really strange Final Smash:
Negative Zone. No one really knows where this move
comes from since well, it was just totally
improvised by the creators. After getting a Smash
Ball, Luigi will create a green circle around him.
Any enemy that is caught in it will instantly obtain
negative side effects. They may be slow, have a
flower on their head, etc. This move doesn't last
all that long and can't kill opponents, but it's
good for racking up damage while they're phased!
(Rating: 4/10) |
Mario - Final Smash: Mario Finale |
Mario actually had his Final Smash shown all the way
back in May 2006 at E3 when Brawl was first
announced. After obtaining a Smash Ball, Mario can
let his Mario Finale loose all over his opponents.
In whichever direction Mario is facing, he will
unleash a series of fireballs to damage his
opponents. If an opponent gets caught in the middle
of it, the stream of fireballs will carry him or her
off the stage. This move has OK range and OK power,
but if a player knows it's coming, it can be dodged
pretty easily. (Rating: 4/10) |
Marth - Final Smash: Critical Hit |
Marth joins the Brawl with the most powerful Final
Smash in the game. It's called Critical Hit, and
that's exactly how it is! After obtaining a Smash
Ball, opponents need to be extremely wary of Marth.
When used, Marth will glide in the direction he is
facing and will hit any opponent in his way. After
that, there's no hope. Marth's Final Smash is a one
hit KO despite any percentage - Only Ike with his
Super Armor and Olimar with his Pikmin Order can
survive it when timed right. Marth, however, can
suicide with this move if the stage has no edge, and
this move isn't the easiest to pull off. It also has
a nifty life bar from the Fire Emblem series!
(Rating: 10/10) |
Meta Knight - Final Smash: Galaxia Darkness |
Galaxia Darkness belongs to none other than Kirby's
rival: Meta Knight! After all, that cape has to be
used for something! After Meta Knight breaks a Smash
Ball, he can use Galaxia Darkness. Meta Knight will
sheath his cape around surrounding enemies,
entrapping them in darkness. In a flash, Meta Knight
will slice them with his sword, sending them flying.
This move has excellent knockback and does about
40%, but it has extremely limited range which is
only better than that of Zero Suit Samus.
(Rating: 4/10) |
Mr. Game and Watch - Final Smash: Octopus |
Octopus: a move straight from the old LCD Game &
Watch games! After Mr. Game & Watch obtains a Smash
Ball, he can use it to transform into a giant 2D
octopus, hence the name Octopus! Using the various
buttons on the controller will cause Mr. Game &
Watch to extend his tentacles to attack enemies. The
power is in the tip of his tentacles. Otherwise,
force enemies to hit the octopus' body to damage
them! Octopus has good power and knockback to make
Mr. Game & Watch formidable with a Smash Ball!
(Rating: 6/10) |
Ness - Final Smash: PK Starstorm |
Ness shares the same Final Smash as Lucas: PK
Starstorm! After he gets a Smash Ball, Ness can hurl
comets down on his opponents. Ness' PK Starstorm
actually covers a greater range than Lucas' and is
more valuable on larger stages. The stars are also
more spread out than that of Lucas'. The power is
relatively same as Lucas', so there isn't much
difference there. The only other difference is that
Ness' PK Starstorm is blue! (Rating: 4/10) |
Olimar - Final Smash: End of Day |
The tiny Captain from the Pikmin series enters the
fray with a very powerful Final Smash, one that is
very fitting for Olimar: End of Day. After Olimar
takes out a Smash Ball, he can use his spaceship
from Pikmin. As it's launching, opponents will take
damage at a pretty decent rate. After a short
period, the ship will launch down and send opponents
flying with great knockback power! This move is
harder to dodge than most, so it's very useful!
(Rating: 7/10) |
Peach - Final Smash: Peach Blossom |
Peach's Final Smash is the only one in the game with
healing properties. Well, ok, Kirby has one too, but
it's not a guarantee for Kirby! After Peach breaks a
Smash Ball, she can put opponents to sleep. Once
they are sleeping, peaches will rain down on the
stage. This Final Smash can be good or bad - if
opponents are close, it'll do 40% and put them to
sleep for a long time. If they're not, the move will
do little damage and opponents won't sleep for very
long, allowing them to heal with Peach's own food!
Some may find it better to take a good shot at
opponents instead of eating the peaches when they're
asleep! (Rating: 4/10) |
Pikachu - Final Smash: Volt Tackle |
Pikachu's Final Smash is just so fitting for him -
after all, Pikachu himself is essentially a ball of
electricity, so why not make him literally into a
ball of electricity?! That's what Volt Tackle does!
Pikachu will be surrounded by electricity and will
fly around the stage erratically. When the player
hits the A button, Pikachu will flash, damaging
opponents. This move is very difficult to control
until the end, but with the flash, it is very good
at damaging and KOing opponents! (Rating:
5/10) |
Pit - Final Smash: Palutena's Army |
Think way, way back to the original Kid Icarus and
you'll find where Pit's Final Smash comes from! One
Pit acquires a Smash Ball, he can summon the Goddess
Palutena. In the original Kid Icarus, Pit was the
captain of Palutena's Army, so he's now asking her
to help him out! Palutena will summon a bunch of
Centurions which make up the army. They'll fly
around damaging and knocking Pit's opponents for a
little bit. This move is somewhat difficult to avoid
and is very solid all around (Rating: 4/10) |
Pokémon
Trainer - Final Smash: Triple Finish |
The Pokémon Trainer wields the power of fire, water,
and grass for his Final Smash! A Smash Ball can be
gotten with either Squirte, Ivysaur, or Charizard -
it doesn't matter who has the Smash Ball because the
Final Smash is all the same. The Pokémon Trainer has
Triple Finish, which combines the power of Squirtle,
Ivysaur, and Charizard. Use it when opponents are in
line with the Pokémon Trainer. This move has great
power and knockback, so it's a true testament to the
strength of his Pokémon! It's super effective!
(Rating: 8/10) |
ROB - Final Smash: Diffusion Beam |
It's been a long time since ROB has been featured in
the spotlight. There was that whole Mario Kart DS
thing, but ROB has become a true Smash Bros.
character! He's from the series Gyromite which was
in Japan, and his Final Smash is Diffusion Beam.
When ROB obtains a Smash Ball, he'll be firing a
constant, short-ranged laser at his enemies. It's
similar to a player having Superspicy Curry! Rob can
move around and attack enemies in the process, and
it's great for racking up damage. (Rating:
5/10) |
Samus - Final Smash: Zero Laser |
Samus' normal Charge Shot must've not been strong
enough for her! When Samus gets a Smash Ball, she
can unleash her Zero Laser: A massive beam of energy
that engulfs any enemy she is facing. Plus, it just
looks cool! Opponents will get caught in her beam
since it lasts a few seconds and will get damaged
and flown off the stage. There is one major negative
to the Zero Laser though: A beam that big takes a
second to start up, so enemies at a far range can
dodge it easily. The beam is also so powerful that
it destroys Samus' Power Suit in the process and
becomes Zero Suit Samus! (Rating: 4/10) |
Snake - Final Smash: Grenade Launcher |
Snake's a tough guy. He has all kinds of equipment
at his disposal - bombs, missles, etc. For his Final
Smash, Snake has gone all out and obtained a Grenade
Launcher! When he breaks a Smash Ball, Snake will
call a helicopter. He'll then hold onto the rope
ladder and will be able to shoot his enemies that
remain on the stage! Snake has a total of 12 shots
and has to relod after every 6, but if a player
doesn't use all 12 shots time will run out
eventually. This move is great for KOs!
(Rating: 7/10) |
Sonic - Final Smash: Super Sonic |
If there was one character who had a no-brainer for
a Final Smash, it's Sonic. Super Sonic is the only
possible Final Smash that Sonic could have - it
would be an insult otherwise! Sonic can use the
Chaos Emeralds to transform after getting a Smash
Ball. When he becomes Super Sonic, he is invincible
and can fly around, damaging any who touch him.
Sonic will have speed that is unseen before, making
him difficult to control. However, his Final Smash
lasts for a long time, much longer than other
character's Final Smashes. Super Sonic is incredibly
powerful with great KO power and even great damage
power. (Rating: 10/10) |
Toon Link - Final Smash: Triforce Slash |
The big-headed, tiny-bodied hero from The Legend of
Zelda: The Wind Waker enters the Brawl with a
powerful Final Smash called the Triforce Slash! It's
actually the exact same as Link's Final Smash,
except that the Triforce has a "cartoon" look to it!
When opponents are lined up with Toon Link, use the
Smash Ball to entrap them in the Triforce. Toon Link
will deliver a series of powerful blows and at the
end, will give them a massive slash with the Master
Sword. This move does over 60% usually and has great
KO potential. (Rating: 7/10) |
Wario - Final Smash: Wario-Man |
Wario has a really unique fighting style and even a
really unique personality for that matter! With a
Smash Ball, Wario can transform into Wario-Man!
Wario-Man is kind of like his ultra ego where his
personality shines. When he is Wario-Man, Wario has
all the same moves he did as regular Wario. This is
sort of like Bowser's Giga Bowser, but Wario cannot
be hurt by this and he doesn't gain any huge
strength bonus. However, Wario can jump really high
and has super speed when he transforms.
(Rating: 7/10) |
Wolf - Final Smash: Landmaster |
OK it's getting old at this point: Another Smash
Bros. character with the Landmaster has his Final
Smash! This time, Wolf joins Fox and Falco in having
the Landmaster as his ultimate move. Wolf's
Landmaster has red highlights instead of blue.
Unlike Falco's, it is not good in the air. However,
it is the most powerful of all 3 Landmasters and has
good movement on the ground. There is one real
drawback: the time Wolf can use the Landmaster lasts
a lot less than either Fox's or Falco's.
(Rating: 4/10) |
Yoshi - Super Dragon |
Yoshi: A dinosaur or dragon? It's been asked for
years now, and this may be the game to finally
answer the question! When Yoshi gets a Smash Ball,
he can grow wings and spit fire! This Final Smash is
straight out of Super Mario World - Blue Yoshis can
fly, Red Yoshis can spit fire in that game! There
are Yellow Yoshis that hurt nearby enemies on the
ground when jumping, but Yoshi doesn't gain that
ability in Brawl - just the fire and wings! Fly
around and hit enemies either with Yoshi's body or
with his fire. This move is extremely powerful, hard
to dodge, and lasts for quite a while.
(Rating: 9/10) |
Zelda/Sheik - Final Smash: Light Arrow |
Zelda holds magnificent magic powers throughout the
Zelda series, and one of the magic items she holds
are the mystical Light Arrows - the ultimate weapon
in numerous Legend of Zelda games! In Brawl, Zelda
packs a punch with her light arrows like she does in
other Zelda games! When an enemy is lined up with
her, use the Smash Ball to paralyze them and take
them out with a light arrow. Light Arrow does about
40% and higher and has great, great knockback. Sheik
also uses the Light Arrow as well. (Rating:
7/10) |
Zero Suit Samus - Final Smash: Power Suit Samus |
Well, if Samus sheds her armor when using her Final
Smash, surely Zero Suit Samus somehow gains it
back...right? Absolutely! After Zero Suit Samus uses
a Smash Ball, she will be engulfed with light and
will transform back into the regular Samus in her
Power Suit. However, if an opponent is close by to
her when she uses it, the transformation gives off
great power and can devastate an enemy! But the
enemy has to be real close - this is the most
limited Final Smash in the game when range is
considered. (Rating: 5/10) |
